In-Person vs. Virtual Doula Support: Which One Is Right for You?
Choosing a doula is one of the most personal decisions you can make as you prepare for your birth experience. And these days, there is a whole new layer to that choice: do you want your doula right there in the room with you, or would a virtual doula be a better fit for your life and circumstances? Both options are wonderful, and both come with their own set of strengths.
At Beautiful Births and Beyond, we offer both options for our clients. It’s been a minute since we’ve talked about the difference between the two services, and how to choose the best option for you.
What Is an In-Person Doula?
An in-person doula is exactly what most people picture when they hear the word "doula"; someone who is physically present with you before, during, and after your birth. They’re in the room, hands-on, and completely focused on you and your support team from the moment you call her to come.
The Benefits of In-Person Support
There is something truly irreplaceable about having a trained, calm presence physically beside you. Here is what in-person doula support looks like at its best:
Physical comfort measures. This is where in-person support really shines. Counter-pressure on the lower back, the rebozo, massage, helping you move through different positions, guiding you into the tub or shower - these are things a doula can only do when she is right there with you. Hands-on comfort during intense sensations can make an enormous difference in how you experience your birth.
Reading the room in real time. An experienced in-person doula can pick up on subtle cues such as your body language, your breathing, the energy shift in the room, and respond before you even have to ask. That kind of intuitive presence can be tricky to replicate through a screen.
A buffer and an advocate. When things move quickly or feel overwhelming, having someone physically present who knows your wishes and can help you communicate with your care team is incredibly grounding. Having someone other than your partner or support person, someone who is emotionally attached to and invested in the situation, can make a huge difference during the intensity of labor and birth.
Partner support. In-person doulas are also there to support your partner or other support people, coaching them on how to help and giving them a breather when they need one. They’re part of your team, and supporting that team is a doula’s first priority.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
In-person doulas typically come at a higher price point, and availability can be a factor depending on where you live. There is also the reality that birth timing is unpredictable. Your doula will be on call for you, but they may have another client due around the same time, which is why it is always good to ask about backup plans. Travel and geography can also be limiting, especially if you are in a rural area or planning a birth at a facility farther from home.
What Is a Virtual Doula?
A virtual doula provides support through video calls, phone calls, text messaging, and other digital communication tools. They may work with you throughout your entire pregnancy and postpartum period entirely online, or they may offer a hybrid model where some appointments are in-person and they attend the birth virtually.
The Benefits of Virtual Support
Virtual doula support has genuinely changed the game for a lot of families, and it is worth taking seriously as a full and valid option, not just a backup plan.
Accessibility. This is the biggest one. If you live in a rural area, a small town, or a place where in-person doulas are simply not available, a virtual doula means you do not have to go without support. Geography is no longer a barrier, and that’s pretty amazing!
Affordability. Virtual doula services are generally more affordable than in-person support, making this option accessible to more families who might otherwise feel priced out.
Choice without limits. When you go virtual, you can work with a doula who specializes in exactly what you need. Whether that is a specific birth philosophy, experience with a particular medical situation, or a background that feels culturally relevant and affirming to you. Regardless of where they’re located, you can find what you need.
Consistent support person. Because your virtual doula does not need to travel or worry about overlapping clients in the same city, there is often more flexibility and availability for continuous communication throughout your pregnancy.
Comfort in familiar surroundings. Many people find it easier to open up and have honest conversations about their fears, hopes, and questions from the comfort of their own home. Virtual prenatal appointments can feel safe, intimate, and extra helpful.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
It seems obvious that a screen cannot replicate the physical presence of someone in the room. A virtual doula cannot apply counter-pressure, walk the halls with you, or jump in when you need a hand held right now. If hands-on physical support is a priority for you, and for many people it absolutely is, that is an important factor to weigh. While virtual doulas cannot physically be there, they can certainly give your support person coaching during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum in order to get the physical assistance you need in the moment. Even if they aren’t in the room, they can ensure you get what you need.
Virtual support also depends on a reliable internet connection and a device that works well, which is worth thinking through in advance. And while your virtual doula can be with you via video throughout your birth, she is relying on you or your partner to hold the phone or set up a tablet, which adds a small logistical element to an already big day. That being said, your virtual doula will help assist you to make a birth plan that includes set up and management of your devices before you get to the big day.
So, Which One Is Right for You?
Here is the honest answer: it depends on what matters most to you.
If hands-on physical support from a third-party support person is at the top of your list, and you have access to an in-person doula who feels like a great fit, that is a beautiful choice. The power of a physical, grounding presence during birth is real, and is what some folks need.
If accessibility, affordability, or the ability to choose a specialist are driving your decision, or if you simply click with a virtual doula whose approach resonates deeply with you, that is equally valid. Great doula support is about the relationship, the trust, and the knowledge your doula brings to the table.
Some families also choose a hybrid approach: working with a virtual doula for prenatal and postpartum support while arranging a local support person or nurse for the birth itself. There is no single right answer here, and it’s important to ask anyone you’re screening if they support this route if it speaks to you.
